Fall Harbor Island Rec Soccer
formerly Mamaroneck Junior Soccer League (MJSL)
Fall Rec soccer at Harbor Island Park is played each Saturday from September 7 through November 2. Midweek training sessions for Minors and Intermediates are from September 11 through November 1.
Schedules for the 2019 season can be found here: Schedules
Harbor Island field map can be found here: Rec Fields
The program is organized by players' school grade and gender.
Games
Each division is allotted a one hour time slot for their session. Therefore, each division’s game ends at a predetermined time regardless of when they started the game. The time slots are the same throughout the season. The K-1 session starts with a practice and ends with a small-sided, 4v4 or 5v5 soccer game. For the first half of the Minors’ season, professional trainers will provide training for the first half hour, with second half hour being a game. The second half of the season will consist of games only.
For the Minors (second half of the season only), Intermediates, and Majors each game consists of two 25 minute periods, with substitutions occurring midway through each half and at half time to ensure that minimum playing rules are met. A team is awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the division.
For the competitive divisions, play is either 7v7 or 8v8, consistent with US Soccer U10 guidelines. The field sizes have been adapted to the players on the field to ensure the participation of as many players as possible.
Coaches
The coaches are the main point of contact for each team. Each team is assigned 1-2 coaches, depending upon the number of volunteers who sign up. For the K-1 and minors divisions, professional trainers are assigned to work with each team each week, A coaches meeting is held before the start of the season where coaches are provided with information about the season, the league's player development philosophy and some training and practice ideas. Each coach has the overall responsibility for his or her team, including:
Division Leaders
Each of the above divisions is overseen by a specific division leader, with a separate leader for each of the boys and the girls. The main responsibilities of the division leader are to form each of the teams and to monitor the teams within the division. For the K-1 program, which is non-competitive, the teams are formed to try and promote the learning and fun aspect of the program. The goal upon formation of the teams in the other divisions, which are competitive, is to achieve parity within the division. The division leader will use the player’s rating from his/her prior year coach, whether the player is or was a travel player, and input from other Rec committee members as a means to achieve this parity. On an ongoing basis the division leader will address any issues that arise during the season from either parents, coaches or other interested parties.
Fields
All games are played Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck. For K-1, the trainers set up the fields to suit the number of participants. For the other divisions, MJSL divides the front section of the Harbor into distinct fields. In addition, the back field at Lanza is divided into 3 separate fields. Harbor Island field map can be found here: Rec Fields
Availability of the grass fields is weather dependent. Field closures will be communicated on this website and via email.
