Mamaroneck Junior Soccer League (MJSL) - Spring Rec Program
About Recreational Soccer
Welcome to Rec soccer. This page serves as a source of information for players, parents, coaches and referees.
The focus of the LMFC Recreational Soccer Program (Rec Program) is to promote the sport of soccer, teach soccer skills and sportsmanship, but most of all ensure that the children have fun!
Children play on a team, organized by grade level and gender. For the fall program, teams have practice weekly and play one game on Saturdays against other teams of the same grade level. We use professional trainers for all our divisions in addition to using parent coaches. Our spring program (pre-K through 2nd grade) is entirely run by professional trainers.
MJSL Fall Rec Program Description
Each of the above divisions is overseen by a specific division leader, with a separate leader for each of the boys and the girls. The main responsibilities of the division leader are to form each of the teams and to monitor the teams within the division. For the K-1 program, which is non-competitive, the teams are formed to try and promote the learning and fun aspect of the program. The goal upon formation of the teams in the other divisions, which are competitive, is to achieve parity within the division. The division leader will use the player’s rating from his/her prior year coach, whether the player is or was a travel player, and input from other Rec committee members as a means to achieve this parity. On an ongoing basis the division leader will address any issues that arise during the season from either parents, coaches or other interested parties
Coaches
The coaches are the main point of contact for each team. Each team is assigned 1-2 coaches, depending upon the number of volunteers who sign up. Before the start of the season the coaches are provided with a soccer clinic run by the professional trainers who operate the K-1 program. The purpose of the clinic is to provide the coaches with some training and practice ideas. Each coach has the overall responsibility for his or her team. They are responsible for:
The coaches are encouraged to enlist parent volunteers from their team to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities
Games
Each division is allotted a one hour time slot for their session. Therefore, each division’s game ends at a predetermined time regardless of when they started the game. The time slots are the same throughout the season. The K-1 session starts with a practice and ends with a micro-soccer game. For the first half of the Minors’ season, professional trainers will provide training for the first half hour, with second half hour being a game. The second half of the season will consist of games only. For the Minors (second half of the season only), Intermediates, and Majors each game consists of two 25 minute periods, with substitutions occurring midway through each half and at half time to ensure that minimum playing rules are met. A team is awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the division.
For the competitive divisions, play is either 7v7 or 8v8. The field sizes have been adapted to the fewer number of players on the field to try and ensure the participation of as many players as possible.
Fields
All games are played at the Mamaroneck Harbor (Harbor Island). For K-1, the trainers set up the fields to suit the number of participants. For the other divisions, MJSL divides the front section of the Harbor into 5 distinct fields that are identified by signs associated with the specific sponsor. In addition, the back field at Lanza is divided into 3 separate fields. A field in front of the Pavilion will also be used for minors.
